About me

Hi, I'm John Arendshorst, and I’m running to be your East Grand Rapids City Commissioner. I’m a West Michigan native, and when the time came to choose where to raise our family, my wife Liz and I knew East Grand Rapids was the perfect fit. Now, our daughters Hadley and Willa attend Lakeside Elementary School, and as a family we enjoy all that East has to offer – excellent public schools, safe neighborhoods, and easy access to local recreation.

I’ve served on the East Grand Rapids Planning Commission since 2015, where I contributed to the development of a new master plan for the city. East Grand Rapids must continue to evolve in its services and development opportunities in order to stay relevant and maintain the excellence residents expect. I'm committed to seeing the master plan through to implementation, and to ensuring that East is a place that families and small businesses come to grow.

Issues

  • Schools. East Grand Rapids Public Schools are truly outstanding. My priority is to improve the partnership between our city and the schools to maintain this excellence.
  • Gaslight Village. As the commercial and cultural hub of East Grand Rapids, Gaslight Village is of vital importance to the community. I’ll look for creative ways to enhance the experience of visiting Gaslight, help tie the downtown corridor to the beauty of Reeds Lake, and encourage development of vacant land.
  • Parks. One of the key benefits of living in East Grand Rapids is access to our beautiful outdoor areas. I’ll invest in the park system and work on upgrading and modernizing Manhattan Park.
  • Walkability. I will focus on enhance the walkability and bikeability of the community to so that our shared natural resources are well-integrated with neighborhoods.

I’m proud of my years of experience as a free-thinking voice on the Planning Commission. As I work toward a new phase of service, my priority is to listen to you – my friends and neighbors – so that our city reflects our values.

This November 5, I’d be honored to earn your vote for Ward 3 City Commissioner.
